HR departments need to focus on productivity

Today is all about productivity and efficiency. For a company to achieve its goals in a tougher economical environment it needs a strong leadership, a well thought strategic plan and engaged people who are motivated to work in the same direction to achieve it. HR specialists play an important role in identifying the company's needs in terms of people programs (training, compensation, and recruiting or employee relations) and choosing the ones which can increase employee productivity.

It’s important that HR will then focus their time and resources on those productivity increasing services and programs. Further steps that will help to increase productivity are described below:

  1. Focus on percentage improvement in terms of productivity. It reffers to  the money spent on people costs for every generated revenue . In this way  you will be able to spot who is the most productive or unproductive, and also compare the results with the previous years. Identify where are the weak points and what are the reasons of low productivity.
  2. Focus on quality of recruiting. Analyze the performance appraisal. Have a look at the new hires comparing to previous years and see if there are any improvements in the way they perfom within the company
  3. Focus on retention. Once you have spotted the high performers ensure retention programes for these key positions in the company.
  4. Focus on employee relations. Focus on employee relations between the bottom-rated managers and the employees they handle.
  5. Focus on training and development impact ratio. Determine the difference between the employees who take jobs offered due to development opportunities and the employees who leave the company because of a lack of  opportunities.
  6. Focus on the impact of HR on the business results of the managers.
  7. Focus on HR expenses per employee. If expenses are at an all-time high without significant results, then HR productivity becomes questionable.
  8. Focus on strengtening your  brand as an employer . Survey can be  conducted to check how the employees  view the management practices of the company.
